About us

What is a cooperative?

It is one of several legal forms of enterprise, such as the company and the joint-stock company. The cooperative is incorporated under a law unique to Quebec: Cooperatives Act. It offers several advantages:

Right to vote

Each member has one vote, which can be used at meetings. Cooperative decisions are made democratically by the members. It doesn't matter how many shares each member holds or how much business a member does.

Socioeconomic Effort
A lever for socio-economic development. The first Saturday in July is International Cooperative Day. It was proclaimed by the United Nations. This shows the significance of this choice of legal form.
Human
Contributes to the well-being of the community and upholds values that put people before profits. Cooperatives are much more sustainable.

The Story of Nicoya

Nicoya aims to educate and promote public awareness of complementary health approaches; it’s much more than just the single discipline of zootherapy!
2018

The story of Nicoya Wellness Cooperative begins in 2018, unknowingly, when Xavier Pouliot, initial promoter, begins a technique in medical imagery. He pursues the program through hospital internships and encounters a case where a dog accompanies a patient for his magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam. He senses the immediate sense of well-being that the animal's presence brings to the whole team and to other people who meet it. Xavier leaves cégep with a diploma but retains this vivid memory.

2023

In 2023, he takes steps with PôleCN and the CDEC de Québec to obtain social economy support. Eliane Trempe and Francis Michaud join him and his idea to form the provisional committee. Nicoya wins its first grants from SISMIC and Entrepreneuriat ULaval. The website and Facebook page are in their infancy.

2022

His studies at Université Laval in 2022 led him to choose the optional course Being Entrepreneurial: Passion for Creation and Action (ENT-1000). The teacher asks each student to come up with five ideas. Xavier immediately thought of a pet therapy service in a healthcare setting, to break the isolation and loneliness of elderly people shaken by the consequences of the health crisis. Eventually, he was lucky enough to get a private guided tour of the Humanitea residences, which offer pet therapy, and became convinced of the positive spin-offs.

2024
The year 2024 is all about getting the cooperative up and running. We're getting ready to welcome future customers and members. Nicoya wants to educate and promote the public about complementary approaches to health, which is much more than the single discipline of pet therapy!

The origin of Nicoya's name

Have you heard of blue zones?

These are places in the world where we find an unusually high concentration of centenarians and supercentenarians in very good mental and physical health compared to the planetary average. These are communities with strong social ties, a sense of belonging and healthy lifestyles. Scientists have been studying these populations ever since, to discover their secrets that may lead us to the Fountain of Youth and improve our well-being. One of these places is Costa Rica's Nicoya region! We chose this place for its short, distinct, and easy-to-pronounce name compared to other blue zones. The name appears unique and reflects the values of our cooperative, such as kindness and solidarity.

In concrete terms, its origin comes from the indigenous peoples. It derives from the Nahuatal language of the Uto-Aztecan family. The terminology is said to mean "water on both sides", referring to the Nicoya Peninsula. To find out more, we encourage you to listen to the recent and captivating miniseries Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones. Dan Buettner presents these four episodes, averaging 40 minutes each. There's also his Blue Zones website. You may also find several other readings, including those published by National Geographic.

Some important definitions

Conventional medicine

relies on surgical interventions and pharmaceutical drugs to identify and treat disease. It relies on medical imaging studies, laboratory tests and other objective, i.e. quantifiable, measurements. These approaches are also known as biomedical.

Integrative medicine

integrating complementary approaches with conventional medicine. The idea of sustainable health is to promote long-term well-being with positive effects for the planet and individuals. Reducing the need for medication is one example. It can also be described as integrative health.

Complementary and Alternative Health Care (CAHC)

based on subjective assessments and holistic principles, i.e. taking into account the whole person (emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual and physical). Costs are generally lower, and there are fewer potential side-effects. The emphasis is on improvement and prevention, rather than treatment, which remains typical of conventional medicine. Various recognized synonyms, without distinction, are alternative medicine, parallel medicine and alternative approaches.
